On this record they say that they write their songs based on their lives and what they observe going on around them. You can see that in the song titles, although you might have to be over 50 to understand the meaning of some of the titles (Chicago and Ohio for instance - they are about "incidents" not locations). While others wrote love songs, these are mostly songs of social commentary.
Here is an alternative way one of these songs could have been written:
On The Way Home - heading to heaven to be with God in person because Jesus Christ died to pay the penalty I owe for disobeying God. I know this is impossible for most people to understand. It seems stupid. But that's what interesting about God. He turns everything around. The proud and strong are last, while the humble and weak are first. By the way, the "weak" will surprise you. They stand up under hadships and torchour that is beyond our imagination. The weak does not not refer to what we think of weakness. A Casper Milktoast type of person. A coward and someone with little physical or mral strength. "The weak" here is recognizing our weakness compared with God and then depending on Him for our strength. We are weak in ourselves and strong in Jesus Christ.
Read the book "Safely Home" by Randy Alcorn. It's an excellent fiction book. A great story. And a story that will show you the strength of the weak... even though that is not what the story is about. How well would you do in a Chinese prison? How strong would you be?

Crosby, Stills and Nash - Crosby, Stills and Nash
Atlantic SD-8229
From my memory alone I'd say this LP came out in 1970. (My memory is not always very good.)
Side One:
Suite: Judy Blue Eyes
Marrakesh Express
Guinnevere
You Don't Have To Cry
Pre-Road Downs
Side Two:
Wooden Ships
Lady Of The Island
Helplessly Hoping
Long Time Gone
49 Bye-Byes
Which of these song titles can I relate to the Bible? The easy one is "Helplessly Hoping" because that describes most people. We are helpless to save ourselves. We are dead in our sins. What can a dead person do to save themselves? If you are dead can you reach out and take the medicine that will make you well? No. If you are dead can you give yourself CPR to save yourself? No. You are dead! So if you are, as the Bible says, already dead in your sins, what can you do to save yourself from sin? Nothing. You are dead and only someone else can save you. The problem else every other person is in the same situation. They can't save themselves let alone save you. That leaves only God. Only God can save you. Do you want God to save you?

1967
Side One:
You Told Me
I'll Spend My Life With You
Forget That Girl
Band 6
You Just May Be The One
Shades Of Gray
I Can't Get Her Off My Mind
Side Two:
For Pete's Sake
Mr. Webster
Sunny Girlfriend
Zilch
No Time
Early Morning Blues and Greens
Randy Scouse Git
Their third LP within about an 18 month period, the Monkees were big in 1967--a year filled with classic LPs. I wouldn't put this one in the "classic" category, but there is still some good music, and a good thought we can get from the song titles.
"You Told Me" is the lead track on this LP... and that's what you'll say when you stand before Jesus on judgment day. "You Told Me" and I didn't listen. Your guilt will be apparent. That you deserve to go to hell will be obvious. Some people will try to avoid hell by proclaiming that they preached about Jesus or even that they did great things in the name of Jesus. But Jesus will turn them away saying,"I don't know you."
The message Jesus is telling you is very simple... turn away from disobeying God, and trust me [Jesus] for your salvation, and you will be saved. You will be in the kingdom of God. That's really all the Bible is saying. Trust Jesus, not yourself.

Meet The Monkees - The Monkees
Colgems COS-101 RE
1966
Side One:
(Theme From) The Monkees
Saturday's Child
I Wanna Be Free
Tomorrow's Gonna Be Another Day
Papa Gene's Blues
Take A Giant Step
Side Two:
Last Train To Clarksville
This Just Doesn't Seem To Be My Day
Let's Dance On
I'll Be True To You
Sweet Young Thing
Gonna Buy Me A Dog
The Monkees' first LP. The Monkees were a group put together as a commercial enterprise and in particular to make a TV show featuring a pop music group. They were a HUGE success. There were a lot of questions raised as to whether they actually had any talent. They did not do live appearances and many thought their songs were recorded by studio musicians. I didn't really care. I enjoyed their music and still do. The Monkees' music was fun, something I don't think we see much of in music today.
Is there a song title from which we can get a spiritual theme? I'll go with"Last Train To Clarksville."
"Last Train To Clarksville" reminds us that there is a last train(or whatever) to where we want to go. Your live here can be thought of as the last train to heaven. When you die, that's it. There are no second chances. You don't come back again to get another chance to live a life that is good enough. You don't go to a place where you can work out the penalty you owe for your sin (purgatory). The Bible makes it clear... you die and there is judgment. This truly is the "last train" to heaven.
What will you be judged on when you die? You obedience to God's law. If you have broken any of God's laws, you must then pay the penalty. It's just like an earthly court, if you do the crime you must pay the time. How many lies have you told? Have you ever been really angry at someone? Jesus said (Matthew 5) that if you are angry at someone (for example, if in anger you call someone a fool), you have committed murder in your heart. Have you ever used God's name as a cuss word, or to express disgust? That is blasphemy. Using the name of God as though it were equivalent to words we use for excrement. Have you ever taken something that does not belong to you? Even it it was something small,it is still stealing.
These are just four of the Ten Commandments. If you answered yes to any of these, you are guilty of breaking God's law. When you die, and ten out of ten people will die, you will face God to be judged. He knows everything you've done. No thought is hidden from God. You will be guilty and the penalty is hell.
But, what if when you appear before God to be judged, He looks at you and says, "Your penalty is paid. You may go." You are not judged. What has happened? He has seen that Jesus died in your place to pay the penalty you owe for breaking God's law. You are free because Jesus Christ paid your penalty. But, that only happens if you accept this free gift from God. You must repent (turn away from disobeying God) and trust the Jesus' death on the cross fully paid your penalty for sinning--breaking God's laws.

More Of The Monkees - The Monkees
Colgems COS-102 RE
1967
Side One:
When Love Comes Knockin' (At Your Door)
Mary, Mary
Hold On Girl
Your Aunt Grizelda
(I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone
Sided Two:
Look Out (Here Comes Tomorrow)
The Kind Of Girl I Could Love
The Day We Fall In Love
Sometime In The Morning
Laugh
I'm A Believer
What song title would you guess I'll pick as providing a spiritual theme. How about "I'm A Believer?" Sounds like a good thing to boast about. But it's not what is on the minds of believers. What is on our minds is,"I wish you were a believer." The song title I'm picking for this LP is all about my desire that you be saved from hell.
When Love Comes Knockin' (At Your Door) - Jesus said that he is standing at the door and knocking. If you open the door he will come in. God is not hiding. Jesus is not hiding. Salvation (the way to heaven) is not hidden. Listen. Jesus is knocking right now.
Why can't you hear him? Because sin separates you from God, blinding you. Making you deaf. The word "sin" means to disobey God. Until you recognize that you are a sinner... that you are someone who has broken God's laws... you will remain blind and deaf. Your focus will be on your sin, not on God. And because of that you will not hear Jesus knocking.
You can be a very spiritual person. But being spiritual has nothing to do with being saved from hell. You can never be good enough, or spiritual enough to reach heaven through your own efforts.
You can be a very religious person. But religion will not save you. Obeying a church will not save you. Obeying a priest will not save you. You would be trying to obey mankind's commands (religions all come from mankind) and that gets you nowhere but hell.
Listen. Hear Jesus knocking at your door. Turn away from all other efforts to reach God. Trust in Jesus alone. Through his death on the cross he paid the penalty you owe for everything you've ever done wrong. Only Jesus can free you from sin. Trust that Jesus did die to pay the penalty for your sins.

Best Of - Peter And Gordon
Capital ST 2549
Peter Asher (England) and Gordon Waller (Scotland)
Side 1:
A World Without Love
True Love Ways
If I Were You
I Told You So
To Know You Is To Love You
Don't Pity Me
Side 2:
I Go To Pieces
I Don't Want To See You Again
Love Me Baby
If You Wish
Woman
I love Peter and Gordon's music. They made some great music. So I'm not picking on Peter and Gordon, but their song "A World Without Love" reminds me that we live in a world filled with love... God's love. I know that Peter and Gordon are talking about personal relationships, but that's the problem. Let me explain.
As I said, I love Peter and Gordon's music. God gave them talent to create good music. As I'm writing this I'm also watching Austin City Limits and there is great music on the TV right now. God has given a lot of people a lot of talent. It's a wonderful gift from God.
But how do we use these gifts from God? Do we use them to glorify the one who gave us these gifts? To glorify the one who gave us our lives and gives us even the air we breath every day? In general no. Most songs glorify humanity and Gods is not even mentioned. It is as though God didn't even exist.
Imagine that someone gave you a a hundred million dollars. It's all the money they have, but they decide to give it to you... tax free! Wow! You buy the house you wanted. Get a nice car. A super wide screen TV and a rockin' sound system to go with it. You pay off you bills and live in luxury the rest of your life. But you never say thank you to the person who gave you the 100 million dollars. You don't even acknowledge that they exist. How do you think they feel?
Or let's turn the question around.
Suppose you have a friend who is sick. They don't have insurance and can't buy the very expensive medicine they need. So you sell your car, start working a second job, and give up your Starbucks coffee. You save you money and buy your friend the life-saving drugs they need. They are saved, but they don't even say thank you. They never call you. They treat you like you didn't exist. How would you feel?
That's what most people do to God.
Use your talent to praise and glorify God, the one who gave you your talent.

I am reminded of what Radar O'Rielly was advised to say about Bach so that although totally without knowledge of Bach he would sound like he knew classical music... "Ahhh. Bach." Virgil Fox and the power of Bach brings a rock concert feel to classical music.

Greatest Hits - T.G. Sheppard
Curb 1-23841
Country 1983
Side One:
I Loved 'Em Every One
Party Time
Finally
War Is Hell (On The Homefront, Too)
Without You
Side Two:
You Feel Good All Over
Last Cheater's Waltz
I'll Be Coming Back For More
Do You Wanna Go To Heaven
Only One You
I was a country DJ for many many years, and I love country music. This LP has got some good country music, judged just on the quality of the music. But the lyrics and song titles tell another story.
T.G. Sheppard's music on this Greatest Hits LP tends toward one of the popular themes in country music, cheating... and numerous empty relationships. They are not sung about as empty relationships. Usually the lyrics celebrate sex with no consequences. For example, he sings about "I Loved 'Em Every One." That sounds like a lonely person. I'm reminded of a song called "Searching For Love In All The Wrong Places."
However, the one song title on this LP that catches my attention is "Do You Wanna Go To Heaven"? Unfortunately he is not really talking about what happens after you die? After all you are here on earth for a blink of an eye. Heaven (or hell) is for eternity. The question "Do You Wanna Go To Heaven" is probably the most important question you can ask. So do you?
If you want to go to heaven I hope the next question is, what do I need to do to get there? That's a good question, but the wrong question. The Bible makes it clear that there is nothing you can do that will get you to heaven. You can not be good enough. You have broken God's laws (lying, stealing, coveting, using God's name in vain. See: The Good Person Test) and you must pay the penalty... hell. The only way you can avoid hell is to find some one else who will pay your penalty for you. Someone else who will die in your place.
That someone is Jesus Christ.

This record came out after Jane Fonda's role in "On Golden Pond." The movie raised the compelling and critically important question, how can a woman who is "so old" look so good? Jane Fonda then took this new fame and used to to sell workout records. There's nothing bad about that and it helped many women.
I actually listened to this entire album twice. Once while I digitized it. Then again when the digital recording automatically played back and I was too lazy to interrupt what I was doing to stop the computer. I makes good background noise to fill in the silence.

How Do You Say I Don't Love You Anymore - Freda Payne
M-G-M #E 4370
I have a DJ copy of this LP. It only came in a white sleeve, there is no jacket. There is no date on the record.
Side One:
(How Do You Say) I Don't Love You Anymore
Yesterday
San Juan
You Never Should Have Loved Me
Let It Be Me
On Easy Street
Side Two:
You've Lost The Lovin' Feelin'
It's Here For You
Feeling Good
Sad Sad September
If You Love Me
Too Late
On this LP Freda Payne seems to have a lot of focus on saying goodbye to someone she "loved," but no longer loves. Too bad. Sometimes I like to read the song titles and just get meaning from that. There is "You Never Should Have Loved Me" followed by "Let It Be Me." Sorry Freda, first you tell someone they never should have loved you and then you want someone else to let it be you? Maybe she doesn't understand what love is.
What is the one thing that everybody wants?
The answer: to be loved. We all want to be important to someone... to be loved by someone. God made us that way. God is about relationships and has made us to be in a loving relationship with Him. We can imperfectly meet some of our need for love through the love we receive from our spouse. That's why marriage is so important. It gives us someone who we know will love us no matter what. Or at least that is the way it is supposed to be. Freda Payne is giving us a different picture of love. It's a lonely picture.

Just You And Me Together Love - John Laws
RCA AFL1-2362
1977
With music by Henry Mancini.
I digitized it anyway, but this may be one of the worst LPs I own. The music is non-descript, but okay. But the poems are... well I can't describe them. This is an LP of John Laws reciting poetry. I suppose there are people who might enjoy this poetry, but for me it pretty much goes no where.
The titles listed on the LP jacket repeat "Just You And Me Together Love" many times, but here are a few of the other titles that are listed:
The Scent Of Your Nearness (repeated several times)
Forgetting The Time
Closer
That Little Old Maid
The Rhythm Of Wanting
Hair Slicked Down And Awkward Flowers
1977

In 3-D - Weird Al Yankovic
Rock 'n' Roll Records FZ 39221
1984
Side One:
Eat It
Midnight Star
The Brady Bunch
Buy Me A Conda
I Lost On Jeopardy
Polkas On 45
Side Two:
Mr. Popeil
King Of Suede
That Boy Could Dance
Theme From Rocky XIII
Nature Trail To Hell
Although I love novelty records, and have a fairly good collection of them, I'm not a big Weird Al Kankovic fan. But I do like the way some of his songs are also social commetary on the stupid things we think are so important.
What is really important to you? What is the most important thing or person in your life? That leads me to the question, what is your purpose in life? What are you doing here? The comment section is available. Do you have an answer for any ofthese questions????

Fiedler's Greatest Hits - Arthur Fiedler And The Bostom Pops
RCA - CRL-2-3383
1979
Side One:
Light Calvary Overture
Wine, Women and Song
Liebestraum
Malaguena
Side Two:
Jalousie
Waltz
Les Preludes
Side Three:
American Salute
Rhapsody In Blue
Hoedown (From Rodeo)
Side Four:
Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy
In The Mood
The Way We Were
St. Louis Blues
I Want To Hold Your Hand
The Stars And Stripes Forever
The song title that jumps out at me on this LP is "Wine, Women and Song." Next year has been proclaimed the Year Of Darwin. It is the 200th anniversary of his birth and the 150th anniversary of the publication of his book on favored species (origins). If evolution is true then this is what life is all about: wine, women and song. Or as the Bible says it: eat, drink and be merry.
What if you could go to a party every night. There was always excellent food. You could have all you wanted to drink (sorry, I can't get rid of the hangover you'll have the next morning, however). Sex was available to all and the music was incredible. Would this be heaven? This is what Muslims believe heaven is like. But is this truly paradise?
There are people who can do this. And they get bored out of their minds. They search for ever greater thrills because our lust... for food, drink, sex and entertainment and never be filled. Why? Because we are not really looking for those things. What we are looking for is love. What we are running from is loneliness.
God created us to be loved, and only God can love us so completely that our need for love is filled and overflowing. The problem is that we reject God. We don't want God because we think He will take away our wine, women, and song. We turn away from God because we want to do what we want, not what God wants us to do.
But when we disobey God, we not only turn away from the only source of love that can drive out the loneliness and fill us with love, we condemn ourselves to hell for disobeying God. And there is no way to avoid it. You do the crime, you pay the time... eternity in hell. The crime is against an infinite God, so the penalty is infinite.
The only way you can avoid hell is to find someone who will take your punishment in your place. Who will do that for you? Who can do that for you? There is only one... only Jesus Christ. He died on the cross, taking the full force of God's wrath and judgment on himself for all the crimes against God that you have done. All you need to do is repent (turn away from disobeying God) and trust Jesus. Trust that he really did take your punishment so that you can live.

Irish Night At The Pops - Arthur Fiedler And The Boston Pops
RCA - LSC-2946
1967
Side One:
The Irish Suite
Londonderry Air
Side Two:
The Count Of Luxembourg Waltz
Old MacDonald Had A Farm
Look Sharp! (March)
George M. Cohan Medley
I know that a Boston pops concert can't be solely focused on one type of music. They try to appeal to a broad range of music tastes. But I would have enjoyed an LP that had all Irish music. Maybe I'm in a complaining mood this week, but I was in the mood for some Irish music and this just whetted my appetite.

Great American Marches - Arthur Fiedler And The Boston Pops
RCA AGL1-1334
1976
Side One:
Strike Up The Band
National Emblem March
Seventy-Six Trombones
Yankee Doodle
Up The Street
St. Louis Blues March
Side Two:
The Stars And stripes Forever
March Of The Toys
Dixie
Semper Fidelis
Get Me To The Church On Time
American Patrol
I love maches and I love Arthur Fiedler And The Boston Pops. But somehow any time an orchestra plays a march it just does not seem to come out with the power and stirring emotion that a marching band delivers. Maybe it's the strings. They soften the sound of the march and take away from its vibrancy. I don'r mean to insult Arthur Fiedler, but I'll take a good high school marching band... except they never seem to play marches any more. What's with that?

Welcome Back My Friends... Emerson, Lake & Palmer
The full title of this LP is: Welcome Back My Friends To The Show That Never Ebds - Ladies And Gentlemen
Maniticore MC-3-200 (Distributed by Atlantic)
Three Discs
Released in 1974
Side One
Hoedown
Jerusalem
Toccata
Side Two
Tarkus
Side Three
Tarkus (Conclusion)
Take A Pebble (Including: Still.. You Turn Me On and Lucky Man)
Side Four
Piano Improvisations
Take A Pebble (Conclusion)
Jeremy Bender / The Sheriff
Side Five
Karn Evil 9 (1st Impression)
Side Six
Karn Evil 9 (2nd and 3rd Impressions)
I have to admit that I just don't get Emerson, Lake and Palmer music. It's somewhat like a rock symphony, but it never seems to go anywhere. I guess I'm just not musically sophisticated enough. This one goes fairly low on the list of my 5,000 favorite LPs.

Summer Day Reflection Song
Do You Hear Me Now
Colours
Universal Soldier
Josie
Catch The Wind
Why Do You Treat Me Like You Do
To Try For The Sun
Hey Gip (Dig The Slowness)
The War Drags On
Sunny Goodge Street
In the 60's it was said that you couldn't trust anyone over 30. Where does youth and inexperience get the wisdom to tell us what to do. That's what the folk singers on the 60's were doing. And I loved folk music and the "wisdom" seemed true.
Actually it is not the age of those giving wisdom, the real question to be asking is about the source of that wisdom. Where does the wisdom come from? Is it from God or from man? The wisdom we need is the wisdom of God... from the scriptures, not from a "prophet" claiming to speak the word of God. One of the songs is called "Do You Hear Me Now?" God is asking that question. He's made Himself plainly known. He has given us the wisdom we need... but do we hear or are we deaf?

Land Of The Giants - New Christy Minstrels
Columbia CL 2187
I was listening to this LP today and was struck by thethought that much of what they are signing about has been forgotten. American has turned away from her heritage. Here are the songs on this LP.
Land Of Giants
Joe Magarac
John Henry And The Steam Drill
Paul Bunyan
Casey Jones
Stormy
Mighty Big Waves
Mount Rushmore
Blacksmith Of Brandywine
Natural Man
Appleseed John
El Camino Real
My Name Is Liberty
I saw the film Obsession two days ago. It's a film that shows how much radical Muslims hate America. It included images from Muslin TV shows, one of which showed the Statue of Liberty with a burning skull for a face. Then I listened to "My Name Is Liberty" today. They are so totally opposite. We think of the Statue of LIbery as being welcoming. American's are welcoming. Even with all the hatred directed against American from Islam, we don't hate in return. But, of course, that is seen as a weakness.

Cher (LP Title) - Cher
This LP was released on Kapp (KS 3649) in 1971. It includes one of Cher's most recognizable songs, Gypsys, Tramps and Thieves.
Here are the songs:
The Way of Love
Gyspys, Tramps and Thieves
He'll Never Know
Fire And RainWhen You Find Out Where You're Goin' Let Me Know
He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother
I Hate To Sleep Alone
I'm In The Middle
Touch And Go
One Honest Man
When I listen to an LP I sometimes think the songs express the artist's thoughts, feelings and questions. That's probably not the case. Reality is most likely that they thought it wa a good song people would enjoy hearing, and thus spend money to buy the record. But you never know...
In this case the song "When You Find Out Where You're Goin' Let Me Know" caught my attention. There are only two options. We are all heading to either hell or heaven. Finding out which one you are heading toward, and maybe changing your direction, is the most important thing you have to do. You are spending a brief moment in this life... heaven and hell are for eternity. So which is it?
Do you know where you are going?
Almost everyone "knows" they are heading for heaven. I say this because I've asked a lot of people this question. But the problem is that they say they are heading to heaven because they are good, or at least better than some other people. That's a real problem. God has plainly told us that no one is good. No one can get to heaven by being good enough. The only way to get to heaven is if someone else pays the penalty you owe for breaking God's laws. Someone else needs to die so you can live. Thart someone else is Jesus Christ. Trust that he died in your place and you can answer the question this song poses. You'll be going to heaven. (Take the Good Person Test.)

Thart someone else is Jesus Christ. Trust that he died in your place and you can answer the question this song poses. You'll be going to heaven. (Take the Good Person Test.)

Gimme Gimme Good Lovin'
Kasenetz-Katz became famous for bubble gum music. "Gimme Gimme Good Lovin'" was a big bubble gum hit, but this version is a rock version.
The artist that had the biggest hit with "Respect" was Aretha Franklin. Who do you respect? Why do you respect them? Are they someone who is a truly good person? Are they someone who is loving? Are they someone who sacrifice for others? Jesus said that there is no one good but God. God not only loves, He is love. God sacrificed His only son to pay the penalty you owe so that you may go free and live. Do you respect God?
