Do you know who Elijah was? He was a prophet in the Old Testament. His name means "My God is Jehovah".
He is one of the more significant prophets. God used him to raise the dead and to bring fire down from the sky.
Elijah was a prophet when Queen Jezabel was in power. The name "Jezabel" describes a woman who is a traitor. Queen Jezabel led her people to turn away from God and worship Baal. Obviously she didn't like Elijah.
In 1 Kings 18 you can read about the confrontation between Elijah and the prophets of Baal. It was Elijah, the only prophet of God left vs. 450 prophets of Baal on a mountain top. The challenge was to set up an alter, put a sacrificial bull on it, than call on your god to send fire from heaven to light the wood to burn the sacrifice.
The prophets of Ball went first. They took their bull and prepared it. They piled up their wood. All morning long they called on Baal to light the fire... with no response. As day went on they slashed themselves with swords and spears, as was their custom to get the attention of Baal. They shouted louder and kept it up into the evening. Nothing happened.
Of course, a god who is not real can not answer no matter how loud you shout and what you do.
No it was Elijah's turn. He built an alter. He arranged the wood and prepared the bull. He dug a trench around his alter. Then he had water poured on the wood. So much water that it run down off the wood and filled the trench. He made sure the wood was soaked. Then he prayed... and God sent fire from heaven that burned up the wood, the bull, the stones of the alter and even all of the water.
Why was this done? Read 1 Kings chapters 17 and 18.
